What if you could reserve some storage (for example on Amazon S3 or on some provider of your choice), and I would do a regular backup of the complete forum to this place?!
I would also provide some scripts which can restore the whole forum from this backup at an arbitrary provider, plus instructions how to do it.
Then in case the forum here would be deleted by whatever unlucky reason, it could be restored from your storage place.
For the standard storage on Amazon S3 you pay 2.3 cent per GB per month.
The forum size is in the moment 1.3GB (this includes database backups since 2013, one DB backup is currently only 5MB).
The wiki is another 175MB.
So I guess one could keep the backup costs just under $1 per year.
If then some other persons like Sheldon and Gottfried would have access to that backup storage, the chances get even better for forum incident survival (and I would sleep much better). Even if there would be a lack of technical skills, one could just use a devloper from Fiver for restoring the forum.
What do you say James?!
I can definitely do that! That's a great idea! I'll get going on getting this going!
Give me a week or two, to figure out the logistics!
EDIT: So I registered with AWS; it's free until I start adding things; Just let me know what's the next step. Should I add you as a user to the account? (Not too sure how to do this; never worked with anything in web development, lol).
Just tell me what to do and I'll do it, bo!
I can already access a cloud by using s3; the first 5gb is free for 12 months; then I imagine they price you per gb. I've dl'd the forum, but it's definitely suboptimal; the code would be much more efficient for cloud storage. I'm not worried about the pricing for 10-15 gbs; it's once we exceed that I might try to cut the fat; but 1-5 gbs I'm not worried.
Regards
EDIT2:
Also, you're very correct, Gottfried. We should definitely have a zoom call to discuss what we should do. Tomorrow doesn't work for me, we should agree on a day sometime next week; I'm free everyday except friday. I'll need at least 3-4 days notice though.
I've been talking to my friend, who knows more about this ISP domain hosting nonsense. He thinks it might be beneficial on my part to talk to a representative of AWS or another domain provider to at least flesh out how to transfer the forum from one domain to the next; and in the mean time have a mirror we maybe pin to the home page to direct users to the alternative domain.
If bo isn't opposed; I think it may be nice to have twin hosting system already built in. I don't mind paying whatever extra it is.
